“Lindprii” is a portrait of a filmmaker and a legendary Estonian film. In 1971, the controversial, young and talented director Vladimir Karasjov-Orgusaar completed the nearly four-hour (!) television film “Lindpriid” (“Outlaws”), which can rightly be called the arthouse flagship of Estonian film history today. The film was something so new, different and strange that the panic that followed its release took on the dimensions of a witch hunt. An attempt was made to destroy “Lindpriid” from the face of the earth, but the film’s cinematographer Rein Maran managed to save one copy.
In the documentary “Lindprii”, the unusual life story of one of Estonia’s most talented directors, Karasjov, is thoroughly told here, and various interesting background information about both the making of “Lindpriid” and its aftermath is also published. Since the production period has been long, we also see several people who have already left us speaking on screen, such as actors Ago-Endrik Kerge, Tõnu Aav and Ada Lundver and the film’s composer Veljo Tormis. In addition to family members, such as former wife Ene Rämmeld and son T.G.M. Xaintorxare, the film also features the then president Toomas Hendrik Ilves and the legend of the anthropological documentary Jean Rouch.
“Lindpriid” is a fascinating historical journey into the past of Estonian cinema. If you want to do some preliminary work, the feature film “Lindpriid” can be found in the ERR archive. We recommend it!
