At Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Dr. Maurizio Bini and his team of expert doctors and nurses provide medical care both to people seeking parenthood through in vitro fertilisation, as well as to individuals applying for gender-affirming care.

Gianluca Matarrese’s film follows Bini’s work over several months, as he navigates daily between his patients’ personal wishes, ethical questions in medicine, and the conservative legislation of Italy. By observing patient consultations, the film presents a wide range of people arriving at the clinic from different backgrounds, each ultimately hoping for the same thing – the opportunity to live a life meaningful to them.

In the politically volatile climate of Italy, where bodily autonomy is constantly under debate, the times are uncertain also at Bini’s practice. The hormonal and surgical treatments offered by Niguarda Hospital to both cisgender and transgender people are a rarity on a national scale in the public healthcare system in Italy. Despite opposing forces, Bini meets his patients with warmth, even humour, and above all, as individuals. Matarrese’s documentary portrays the reality of Bini’s patients without sensationalism.
